Asphalt has been used in the United States since 1870. Approximately 94% of our paved roads and highways are asphalt surfaces. Asphalt also remains a popular surface for parking lots, driveways, walking trails and bike paths. In addition to roads and runways, asphalt is used to pave parking lots, walking trails, and more.
